How To Beat The Summer Heat

When it comes to the weather in the Midwest, I swear we can’t win! In the winter you dealing with subzero temperatures and mountains of snow for months on end. In the summer you have to put up with scorching hot temperatures on top of humidity that rivals what you see in Florida. I’m a Midwestern girl at heart, so I’ve learned to take the highs and lows in stride. I have to say though that I much prefer the scorching hot temperatures to any winter day in the Midwest. I abhor being chronically cold, and it is nice not to have to wear multiple layers for once. It’s a good thing I don’t mind it as the temperatures have been in the high 90’s for much of the week. My daughters and I even ran a 5K yesterday in the heat, and it was definitely not easy! With a few simple tips in mind, however, beating the summer heat is no sweat!

Wear As Little Clothing As Possible

When it is hot as it has been this week, my actual preference is to wear no clothing at all. Since I’ve never been in a nudist colony in my life, and I don’t want to stay indoors all the time, I will have to stick with as little clothing as possible. For me this means strappy rompers and lightweight sundresses. This type of clothing is breathable and makes the summer heat more bearable. I stumbled across this adorable tie waist romper when looking to update my summer wardrobe. I knew instantly this was the perfect romper for these soaring temperatures! My decision to buy it was even easier since it is on sale for under $30. I love the feminine pink and white stripes. The tie waist is such a nice detail too. This is one of those essential summer pieces that is easy to just throw on, add a few accessories, and head out the door. This romper is not too short, so it’s great for a day of running after the kids!  Even though I am partial to pink, this romper also comes in a lovely floral print.

As I mentioned, dresses and rompers are my go-to pieces of clothing in the scorching hot weather. See below for more lightweight must-have summer looks:

Stay In The Shade

Obviously, in on a hot sunny day you want to stay out of the blazing sun. Sometimes though that just isn’t possible! So make your own shade with a fun straw hat and a pair of cute summer sunglasses. I’ve been seeing these adorable YSL sunglasses in black for a while now. When I noticed they were available in white, I knew I had to have them! These sunglasses are my big splurge for the summer. If you want sunglasses like these without the high price tag, then these are another option that look very similar.  A cute straw hat such as this one by Lack of Color is a great way to create your own shade, and add style to your outfit. Go Out In The Early Morning or Late Evening

This is so important when it comes to trying to stay cool in the summertime. We try to get our errands done first thing in the morning. This is not only to beat the heat, but also to avoiding traffic and crowds. When we did our 5K yesterday we were so thankful that it started at 8:15 in the morning. When it comes to taking pictures for this blog, late evening is actually my favorite time to take pictures. There is nothing I find prettier than soft evening light for photos.

Stay Hydrated

This goes without being said, but is so often forgotten. It is so important to replace all the fluids you’re losing to sweat. Carry a bottle of water with you, especially if you are going to be outside for long periods of time. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration recommends water breaks every 15 to 20 minutes and drinking four cups of water every hour you’re outdoors when the heat index hits 103°F. We have definitely hit that this week! Of course, taking a dip in the pool is a great way to beat the summer heat. See below for some of my favorite bathing suits:

Get a Personal Fan

When you know you have to be out in the blazing heat for hours on end, a personal fan is really handy to have. When we went to Disney World two years ago, I bought this portable misting fan for our trip. We were so glad we had it!  When we did our 5K yesterday, we also carried a little fan with us, and it was a lifesaver. I almost always pick up the personal fans we use from Amazon, as they offer so many great options:

I hope this post is helpful! It doesn’t look like we are going to have a reprieve from the heat anytime soon, so I am definitely implementing the above tips on a regular basis. What are some ways that you beat the summer heat? I’d love to hear it in a comment below!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

  2. Cute outfit! I totally agree that it’s important to have a lightweight outfit with the crazy summer heat. And staying hydrated is a must!

  3. ahh grea ttips! I live in the shade! and earlyyy morning walks this time of year for sure!

  4. I think Washington, DC and the midwest have a lot in common when it comes to the weather! We had highs in the upper 90s with 87% humidity last week!
I LOVE this romper – I thought it was a dress at first but I love how light and breezy it is! Perfect for the summer!

  5. It is hot AF here in Louisiana, and I’ve definitely been struggling doing anything outside. I also like to wear as little clothing as possible and practically live in rompers and sundresses.
