OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Almost everyone I know has been touched in some way by their own (or their loved one’s) experience with this devastating disease. And I’m sure you could say the same thing too. Approximately one in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Over a quarter of a million women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and nearly 41,000 die of the disease. In today’s post I am partnering with Talbots by showing you their lovely LuLu DK scarf. This scarf is especially designed to support breast cancer research and education. This scarf was made with the goal in mind to reach the hearts of those who’ve been affected by breast cancer (whether directly or through a loved one). Through October, 20% of the net proceeds will benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation(R) in providing the tools for early detection and education. So it ends up being money well spent when you buy this wrap.
WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?
Breast cancer, just like any cancer, occurs when cells begin to divide and grow out of control. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) occurs when the abnormal cells grow inside the milk ducts, but have not spread to nearby tissue. DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread to nearby tissue or other parts of the body. When a cancer spreads to other parts of the body it is called metastatic disease. Overall, patients who develop metastatic disease have a poor prognosis, with very low cure rates. This is why early detection is essential.

WHEN TO START SCREENING FOR BREAST CANCER
There is much debate about when to start screening for breast cancer. Several major health organizations have concluded the modest benefits of mammography outweigh the risk of over-diagnosis and treatment. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends routine mammography for women starting at age 402 The American Cancer Society recommends starting at age 453 Weighing the benefits and risks, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend routine mammography for all women 40-494. The American College of Physicians recommends women 40-49 discuss the pros and cons of mammography with their health care providers.
Self breast exams can play an important role in early detection of breast cancer. If you find a lump, it is best to seek out the care of your physician. Other signs of breast cancer include nipple discharge, swelling of the breast, and changes in skin color. Itchy nipples, and painful breasts are also a sign. If you experience these symptoms, don’t ignore them and get the opinion of your doctor. It can make a difference in your life.
About the National Breast Cancer Foundation
The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail. Janelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 34, while married with three young sons. married, and the mother of three young sons. Facing breast cancer in 1980 was no easy task for a woman, as there was little known about the disease, and she was forced to make a decision about her health with few options. She did successfully overcome the disease however.
After that experience, Janelle made a commitment to help women around the world by founding the National Breast Cancer Foundation. It’s mission is to educate women about breast cancer, offer support through free mammograms and other programs, and to teach people about the importance of early detection. NBCF has become one of the world’s most recognized and respected breast cancer charities. Each year NBCF reaches millions of women with life-saving information and assistance.
Talbots Lulu DK Scarf
You can offer your support for breast cancer research and education with the Lulu DK Scarf by Talbots. This limited-edition, 100% silk scarf created by the internationally renowned artist was inspired by the power of nature. 20% of net proceeds benefit National Breast Cancer Foundation.® I have to say this is one of my favorite scarves too! This beautiful silk scarf is a large square size that allows you to style it several ways. The colors are gorgeous and vibrant too! This scarf would go so well with a number of items from the Talbots fall collection. I chose to wear it with their classic grey scalloped merino sweater. I love the color combination of pink, grey, and white. Even though it is fall I decided to wear it with a simple pair of white jeans.
The Lulu DK scarf is just one of five one-of-a-kind scarves in the Art of the Scarf collection by Talbots. 20% of the proceeds from each scarf from the collection will be donated to the NCBF.
