5 Tips for Effortless Fall Layering

Here in the Midwest it feels like winter is already here. We’ve had two small snowfalls already (and the snow isn’t melting given our subzero temperatures). Even though I do mind the cold, the silver lining in all of this is I get to have fun with layering my fall outfits. I’ve always loved layering, as it gives me a chance to express my creativity through my outfits. Layering is also essential for staying warm when it’s cold outside.  Atthe same time layering makes it easy to wear less as the weather warms throughout the day.

Start with a Lightweight Base Piece

The key to effortless fall layering is to start with a light base piece. This could easily be as simple as a light solid or striped layering tee (such as this lightweight, yet soft Lark & Ro t-shirt from Amazon) with jeans. When the weather gets cold a t-shirt doesn’t quite cut it, and that’s when I start with a simple cashmere sweater as the base piece. I like cashmere because it is soft, lightweight, and it has the added benefit of keeping you warm. If you are looking for a simple, classic and affordable cashmere turtleneck, this one by Lark and Ro is one of my favorites. For an even more lightweight option I like this Lark and Ro cashmere crewneck sweater. I’ve always liked the Lark and Ro brand from Amazon as the quality is top notch, the styles are fashionable, and the prices are affordable.

ADD A CARDIGAN, BLAZER, OR JACKET

With these freezing temperatures a heavier top piece is essential! On a warmer day a cardigan or blazer  (such as this cable knit one from BB Dakota or this chic herringbone blazer from Wayf) will do, but when it gets really cold a coat is an absolute must. And coats are such a great way to add style to your outfit! Here I am wearing this  Calvin Klein boucle wool coat. This coat has been my favorite coat of the season! This coat is made of a quality fabric and is good weight I love the zipper accents on the pockets. This coat works for dressy or casual wear. It does run slightly large (a “boyfriend” cut) so make sure to size down.

Add a Scarf

The next layering tip is to add a scarf. A scarf is essential for staying warm, and it is a great way to add style to your fall outfit! There are so many different scarves you could add for fall layering, and the possibilities are endless. I really love this pretty pastel wool/angora blend scarf from Holtzweiler. For a more lightweight option, yet with the same color palette, this Rebecca Minkoff scarf is a nice option.  I also like this color block scarf from Hat Attack.

Add Your Accessories

Accessories are like icing on the cake. Bracelets, rings, and watches are accessories I always wear for fall layering. For this outfit I am wearing a simple layered pendant necklace like this one. Sunglasses are always a fun accessory too. Here I am wearing these pretty soft rose pink sunglasses from Warby Parker. These glasses are a really nice quality that rivals (if not better) the quality of more expensive sunglasses I own.

Top It Off With A Hat

Hats are so much fun to wear, and they are so good at concealing a bad hair day. You loose a lot of heat from your head so wearing a hat can go a long way towards keeping you warm. Berets are some of my favorite hats to wear! I have this wool beret I found on Amazon in at least 5 different colors. The quality is great and at $13 you can have every color! Another favorite hat of mine for layering is a cute pom-pom cable knit beanie such as this one.
