Effortless Fall Layering

I’m writing today’s post from sunny and warm San Diego (I’m here for a medical conference), but back home in the Midwest the weather is chilly, especially in the mornings. Layering is essential for staying warm when it’s cold outside, but at the same time layering makes it easy to wear less as the wether warms throughout the day.

Layered Fall Outfit: Start with a Light Base Piece

The key to effortless fall layering is to start with a light base piece. This could easily be as simple as a light solid or striped layering tee (such as this affordable top by Everlane) with jeans. Personally I love to wear a simple form fitting dress as my base piece. It is important to keep the base layer more form-fitting to keep your shape looking slim. The Leith Ruched Long Sleeve Dress that I am wearing in today’s post is comfortable and and the flattering ruching complements my curves so well! This dress is such a great staple fall piece. It comes in five colors and is under $60.

Layered Fall Outfit: Add a Cardigan, Blazer, or Jacket

The next step to create an effortlessly layered fall outfit is to add a cardigan, blazer, or jacket. I personally like more basic colors, but you could also mix in more bold colors to make your outfit more intriguing. Play with textures as well, as this is a great way to give your fall outfit depth.  I’ve had this soft and warm Raya mohair and wool blend cardigan sitting in my closet for the last year. This cardigan runs very large (I am wearing an XS) and I knew it would look best on me over a shorter form-fitting dress. Worn with anything longer and I would end up looking frumpy. I love this cardigan because it is so warm! The slate blue color is perfect for fall as well.  A more affordable option is this Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Circle cardigan. I have this one in light gray and I wear it all the time!

Layered Fall Outfit: Add a Scarf

The next step is to add a scarf. A scarf is essential for staying warm, and it is a great way to add style to your fall outfit! There are so many different scarves you could add, and the possibilities are endless. Blanket scarves are as popular as ever this season, and I am not complaining. I like this bold graphic geometric motif scarf because it creates a statement, and the colors tie together my dress, cardigan, and even my boots.

Layered Fall Outfit: Add Accessories

Accessories are like icing on the cake. Bracelets, rings, and watches are accessories I always wear. A fun and practical accessory though is a wool floppy hat. This type of hat is one of my favorites to wear because it is warm and I don’t really have to worry about my hair. 

Boots, while essential to wear with a shorter dress in the fall and winter, can also be considered an accessory. I’ve also had these Kate Spade Baina boots since last year as well, and I am happy to see they are still available (at a much lower price). These boots are so classic that they will be in style for years to come. I’ve gotten so many complements when I wear them!
