October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is breast cancer awareness month. Over a quarter of a million women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and nearly 41,000 die of the disease1. Almost everyone I know has had a friend or family member affected by the disease. Over time, a pink ribbon has become the symbol of breast cancer awareness, and it can be found on thousands of products everywhere. But there is more to awareness about breast cancer than just wearing pink.
What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer, just like any cancer, occurs when cells begin to divide and grow out of control. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) occurs when the abnormal cells grow inside the milk ducts, but have not spread to nearby tissue. DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer occurs when cancer cells spread to nearby tissue or other parts of the body. When a cancer spreads to other parts of the body it is called metastatic disease. Overall, patients who develop metastatic disease have a poor prognosis, with very low cure rates. This is why early detection is essential.
When to Start Screening for Breast Cancer
There is much debate about when to start screening for breast cancer. Several major health organizations have concluded the modest benefits of mammography outweigh the risk of over-diagnosis and treatment. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends routine mammography for women starting at age 402 The American Cancer Society recommends starting at age 453 Weighing the benefits and risks, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend routine mammography for all women 40-494. The American College of Physicians recommends women 40-49 discuss the pros and cons of mammography with their health care providers.
Self breast exams can play an important role in early detection of breast cancer. If you find a lump, it is best to seek out the care of your physician. Other signs of breast cancer include nipple discharge, swelling of the breast, changes in skin color, itchy nipples, and painful breasts. If you experience these symptoms, don’t ignore them and get the opinion of your doctor. It can make a difference in your life.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen foundation is the largest, most well-funded cancer organization in the United States5. Komen’s philosophy combines education, research, and community involvement. To date, Komen has funded more than $800 million in breast cancer research. Since its foundation in 1982, Komen has provided funding for basic, clinical, and translational breast cancer research and for the development of projects in breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment. Most of it’s funding (over 90% comes from public donations, sponsorships, and Race for the Cure entry fees. According to Susan G, Komen “breast cancer mortality declined 38% from 1999 to 2014 in the US”. So the education, research and community involvement provided by Susan G. Komen has helped to make a difference in the lives of thousands of women in the United States.
